Hans Mes (born in Utrecht, 1950) studied at the Groningen Academy of Arts ('Minerva') from 1973 to 1979, where he graduated in two disciplines: sculpting and monumental design. His work comprises not just monumental projects, but also small sculptures, reliefs, portraits and medals. On top of this, he writes poems, sketches and paints watercolours. Hans Mes starts his design process by gathering all the information he feels is relevant to the place where the sculpture is to be placed. He captures the intended location and digitally projects the design onto these images, which allows him to view the sculpture in its specific surroundings from all angles. He also assesses the expressiveness of intrinsic and spacial aspects. Only then does he determine which materials and techniques will best capture the essence of the design. Because of this approach, he does not only make bronze and/or stone sculptures but he also uses copper, wood, steel and water. His workshop is geared to a lot of different techniques and includes a bronze foundry; here he works full time on commissioned works of art.

Mes himself characterizes his art as visible symbols of things invisible.

Hans Mes (Utrecht, 1950) studeerde van 1973 tot 1979 aan Academie Minerva te Groningen, waar hij afstudeerde in twee studierichtingen: Beeldhouwen en Monumentale Vormgeving. Zijn werk omvat niet alleen grote monumentale projecten, maar ook kleinplastieken, reliëfs, portretten en penningen. Daarnaast schrijft hij gedichten en maakt hij aquarellen.  Uitgangspunt voor Hans Mes bij zijn ontwerpen is het verzamelen van alle voor hem relevante gegevens met betrekking tot de opdrachtsituatie. De locatie wordt door hem digitaal vastgelegd, waarna hij zijn ontwerp in de al of niet bebouwde omgeving kan projecteren. Daardoor kan het beeld in zijn specifieke omgeving vooraf vanuit alle richtingen worden bekeken. Ook toetst hij inhoudelijke en ruimtelijke criteria op hun communicatieve zeggingskracht. Daarna bepaalt hij pas met welke materialen en technieken de essentie van het ontwerp het best kan worden overgebracht. Door deze werkwijze maakt hij niet alleen beelden in brons en/of steen, maar werkt hij ook met koper, hout, staal of  water als beeldend middel. In een voor deze diverse technieken geoutilleerd atelier, waaronder een eigen bronsgieterij, werkt hij full time in opdracht.

Zelf karakteriseert hij zijn werk als een zichtbaar teken voor iets onzichtbaars.
